Because we saw what a connection they made nine years ago, that’s what made the time when they got back together in the sequel so much more meaningful. They’ve grown up, experienced life, knew what a precious thing it is to make a connection with someone, and they finally begin to grasp the idea that what they have is very special.

Besides, I’m sure everyone has had a person who got away in their life, and from time to time you would think about the “what ifs”. That’s why this movie is so romantic, although not very realistic I guess. It fulfills our fantasies of “What if you have that second chance with the one who got away?”(this tag line was borrowed from the movie trailer ).
